General Director of the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR) Alexander Kogan said TASSthat figure skater Kamila Valieva was expelled from the Russian national team for violating anti-doping rules. On January 29, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Valieva for four years due to a positive doping test taken on December 21, 2021 during the Russian Championships in St. Petersburg. The banned drug trimetazidine was found in the skater’s sample.

On February 7, CAS published the reasoning part of the decision, in which it indicated that the athlete’s positive doping test contained ecdysterone, trimetazidine and hypoxene. The athlete’s representatives claimed that the prohibited drugs entered her body accidentally, including through a strawberry dessert prepared by her grandfather. Valieva assertsthat she did not knowingly take doping.
