General designer of RSC Energia Vladimir Solovyov spoke at the XVIII conference on space and aerospace medicine about what manned complexes of the future should be like.

“They should later become elements of interplanetary stations. For example, we are completely impudently designing the ROS (Russian Space Station) for 50 years, we will gain experience on it before long-distance flights,” Solovyov said. According to the general designer, the new station should be launched into orbit in 2027.

“A lot of medical problems will arise there. We will go through “windows” where there is no magnetosphere. That is, a situation there will be like on the Moon,” says Solovyov. “Naturally, we will have to seriously deal with the protection of astronauts, we will need to create a medical-biological module , a reliable safe living environment.”

Deputy Head of the IBMP RAS Oleg Kotov clarified that during flights to the Moon, cosmonauts will not have the opportunity to return to Earth in case of illness. Therefore, a medical support system for long-distance space flights should be developed now. In addition, the requirements for selection, for the cosmonauts themselves, and for the equipment of the space station will have to change. “Currently there is no full-time doctor on the ISS crew,” says Kotov. “For long-distance flights, one will be mandatory.”
