The head of Roskosmos, Yuri Borisov, said that the crash of the Russian automatic interplanetary station Luna-25 occurred after the engine did not shut down normally and worked for 127 seconds instead of 84. One of the reasons for the incident, he called the interruption of the lunar program for almost 50 years.

As Yuri Borisov explained, on August 19 at 14:10 the engines were turned on, which were supposed to correct the device and put it into pre-landing orbit. The engine shutdown occurred “by time cutoff.” At the same time, Mr. Borisov emphasized that before loading on board the vehicle, the flight task for orbit correction was repeatedly simulated on a ground stand.

“Roskosmos” will understand what exactly led to the disruption of the engine. “I am sure that we will receive all the necessary data during the work of the emergency commission. She has already been appointed, she has begun work,” Mr. Borisov said on the air of the Rossiya-24 TV channel. He expects the results of the commission’s work in the near future.

At the same time, to stop the lunar program due to a failure with the apparatus, in his opinion, would be the most wrong decision. “I think that the negative experience of interrupting the lunar program for almost 50 years is the main reason for the failures,” Mr. Borisov.
