Sergei Melikov proposed renaming the boulevard in the capital of Dagestan, which in Soviet times was given the name Rodopsky. During the years of the USSR, Makhachkala actively maintained contact with its sister city Smolyan, located in the Rhodope Mountains in southern Bulgaria.

Now a small part of the seaside boulevard bears the name of the poet Suleiman Stalsky, the other is still called the Rhodope Boulevard. Mr. Melikov proposed to unite the boulevard by the sea under one name.

“Do we need the word “Rhodope” in the name of the boulevard in Makhachkala today? – quotes him press service administration of the head and government of the republic. – Especially after last week in Bulgaria they organized the demolition of the monument to Soviet liberating soldiers. Some people call this place today the boulevard named after Suleiman Stalsky, others – Rodopsky. I think we have reasons to make a decision in favor of the Dagestan poet.”

It would be good to do this, Sergei Melikov believes, in the year of Suleiman Stalsky’s anniversary (2024 will mark the 155th anniversary of his birth). “But only through public organizations, the Public Chamber, the Writers’ Union,” he clarified.

Last week in Bulgaria has begun dismantling of the monument in Sofia, erected in 1954 in honor of Soviet liberator soldiers.

As Kommersant reported, earlier the Dagestani authorities renamed the stadium named after Olympic pole vault champion Elena Isinbaeva in Makhachkala, returning its name “Trud”. This was done on the initiative of Sergei Melikov. In his opinion, the stadium was named after the athlete in 2017 “hastily, without taking into account the opinion of the townspeople,” since she is not associated with the republic. The decision to rename was made due to her statements “made from behind the cordon.”
