The Guardian reports that experts estimate nearly a quarter of the world’s freshwater fish are at risk of extinction due to global warming, pollution and overfishing. Threatened species include the Lake Turkana big-toothed robber in Kenya and the Mekong giant catfish in Southeast Asia.
Almost a fifth of all threatened freshwater species are affected by climate change, which includes falling water levels, changing seasons and seawater moving up rivers. Of the 14,898 freshwater fish species examined by experts, 3,086 were found to be at risk of extinction.
