The governor of the Tyumen region allowed dams to break in large populated areas

Governor of the Tyumen region Alexander Moor at meeting with the President on issues of liquidation of the consequences of floods, he spoke about the start of work to increase the level of the crest of dams in populated areas by 1–1.5 m. Such a decision, as Mr. Moor indicated, was made because it is possible that the dams protecting large populated areas of Tyumen areas may be breached.
The head of the Tyumen region said that local authorities received information about the achievement of record water levels in the Tobol and Ishim rivers on April 5. Now, according to Alexander Moor, the situation on both rivers is calm, the water level is increasing systematically.
“The greatest dynamics are observed on the Ishim River, but both Tobol and Ishim are still in the riverbed and have not yet reached the floodplain. In Ishim, taking into account the dynamics, we expect an exit, possibly on Saturday,” the governor said. According to Mr. Moore, 51 settlements, 1,847 residential buildings, 7,291 people and about 2 thousand farm and domestic animals fall into the zone of probable flooding.
“We proceed from the fact that the dams that today protect our large settlements can be broken… We have information from the Kazakh side that the volume of water discharged from the Sergeevskoe reservoir is 40% more than it was in 2017. Therefore, in all settlements, including the city of Ishim, we are currently working to increase the level of the dam crest by 1–1.5 m. Where we see bottlenecks, we make additional earthen embankments from loam or sandbags. This applies to all settlements where flooding is possible,” the governor said.
In May 2017, the city of Ishim faced one of the worst floods on record. In the first week of the month, the water in the Ishim River rose to 9.5 m, and over the next few days it added another 30 cm. The Ishim rose higher only in 1941 – to 9.85 m. Almost 6 thousand summer cottages were flooded and 50 residential buildings in Ishim, as well as about 700 plots and 80 houses in the Ishim region. In total, 22 settlements were affected by the flood, the damage amounted to 735 million rubles.
April 8, 2024 in the Tyumen region introduced an emergency situation due to floods associated with the forecast for high water levels in the Ishim and Tobol rivers. The peak flood in the region is expected on April 23–25.
