Russian Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko told reporters that the government will consider an initiative to establish import duties of 200% for wines from NATO countries. Earlier, the Association of Winegrowers and Winemakers of Russia (AVVR) made such a proposal.
“We will consider the corresponding initiative within the framework of the subcommittee of the Ministry of Economic Development on customs and tariff (regulation.—Kommersant,” said Ms. Abramchenko (quoted from TASS).
Later she explained in the Telegram channel that this proposal requires a “balanced approach” and consideration with the involvement of experts. “Of course, we must respond in a mirror way to the sanctions imposed on Russia,” Ms. Abramchenko wrote.
In early March, AVVR Secretary Alexey Plotnikov told RIA Novosti that the organization had asked the government and the State Duma to set import duties for wine from NATO countries at 200%. AVVR also proposed establishing a 20% quota for Russian wine in stores from September 1 and abolishing the preferential regime of import duties on wines from Georgia.
In July 2023, the government increased import duties on wines from unfriendly countries from 12.5% to 20%. The measures began to take effect on August 1, and were later extended through 2024.
