Services for issuing virtual mobile numbers (DEF numbers) in Russia may begin to be blocked from September 1, 2024. The government has said that the use of such numbers is becoming a threat to communications and internet security. About it reported TASS with reference to the relevant resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers.
The government clarified in the document that the list of threats in the Rules for the centralized management of public communications networks in 2024 will be supplemented with a clause on providing access to online resources and instant messengers to users without identifying them. With the help of this amendment, the Cabinet of Ministers plans to increase the effectiveness of the fight against fraudsters’ accounts on the Internet.
To register on social networks or instant messengers, users must provide a mobile phone number. Later, when logging into your account, it is used to identify the owner. Attackers often register using virtual DEF numbers that are in no way tied to personal data.
