The government has approved a response to the bill, which should eliminate the possibility of using fictitious marriages to obtain migration status for foreigners in Russia. The government proposes to cancel a temporary residence permit and residence permit previously issued to a foreign citizen only if the marriage is declared invalid. The current version of the bill also proposes revoking a permit or residence permit if the marriage is dissolved.
The senators also propose to introduce a subclause that would cancel a temporary residence permit if a foreigner received it on the basis of having a son or daughter who is Russian and permanently residing in Russia, but was deprived of parental rights by a court decision or if the adoption was cancelled.
In 2022, about 400 marriages were recognized as fictitious. Judging by advertisements on the Internet, getting married for citizenship costs from 50 thousand to 300 thousand rubles. The government’s response notes that in 2022, citizens of Tajikistan most often used marriage for legalization.
