The government of Saudi Arabia has approved a memorandum on granting the kingdom partner status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). About it reported Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
“A memorandum has been approved on granting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia the status of a dialogue partner in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization,” the statement said, referring to the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers.
The meeting of the Saudi government was chaired by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
The SCO was founded in 2001 by Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. The observers in the organization are Belarus, Afghanistan, Iran and Mongolia, and the dialogue partner countries are Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, Turkey and Sri Lanka. Procedures for granting partner status to Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Qatar began in 2021.
On February 27, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that about 20 countries had expressed their desire to join the BRICS and SCO. In July 2022, Lavrov also spoke about the “line” of countries to join the SCO as full members and observers. Then he clarified that a number of Arab and Asian countries are showing interest.
