Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree on the creation of a government commission to eliminate forest fires, reported in the office press office. It was headed by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Grigorenko. The first meeting of the commission will be held today, August 23.
“The government commission will coordinate the activities of federal ministries and departments, regional authorities to localize and eliminate forest fires on the territory of a number of subjects in the central part of Russia,” the website said in a statement.
The commission included: Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology Alexander Kozlov, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia Viktor Yatsutsenko, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Ground Forces of the Russian Ministry of Defense Albert Budyshkin, and Deputy Head of the Federal Forestry Agency Alexei Venglinsky.
In August, several forests and peat bogs caught fire in Russia due to abnormal heat and lack of precipitation. Rosleskhoz said that a difficult situation with natural fires is developing throughout Central Russia. According to the ministry, one of the reasons for the fire is the frequent visits to forests by people. Fires were recorded in the Rostov, Nizhny Novgorod and Ryazan regions.
Against the backdrop of the current situation, the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Alexander Kurenkov urged governors to ban visits to forests and making fire in nature in the Central and Volga Federal Districts. Extinguishing fires in the Ryazan region took place under the personal supervision of the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations. At the moment, a state of emergency has been introduced in this region.
Due to forest fires in the Ryazan region in Moscow, the smell of burning began to be felt and smog, for the first time residents of the capital reported about it on 17 August. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the area of active burning in the region is 183 hectares, the grouping of forces and means has been increased to more than 9.2 thousand people and 1.7 thousand pieces of equipment. 17 aircraft are involved in the elimination of the fire. In total, 2,409 discharges were carried out by aviation, 15,253 tons of water were dropped. Today, August 23, Oleg Grebenyuk, deputy head of the Main Directorate of Fire Protection, said that it was planned to extinguish the fire within three days.
