An American woman had her limbs amputated due to a rare disease picked up near a steam generator at a concert

A resident of the Texas city of Tyler, the 22-year-old aspiring model attended a concert and picked up legionellosis. In order to save the girl’s life, doctors had to amputate all her limbs. About it informed British tabloid The Sun.

Evelyn Davis attended a concert in June 2022. Three days later, she complained of weakness and fatigue. She felt that her whole body was on fire: the temperature rose sharply to 40 degrees Celsius, but after 10 minutes it dropped. The American decided not to seek medical help, as the symptom quickly passed. However, the next day, the girl’s condition worsened and she ended up in the hospital, where she was diagnosed with sepsis and pneumonia.

The American was in critical condition and fell into a coma, then her internal organs began to fail. Doctors tried to stabilize Davis’s blood pressure and gave her drugs to increase it, but this led to a violation of blood circulation. As a result, she stopped coming to the limbs of the girl.

On the tenth day of her coma, doctors determined that Davis had contracted legionellosis, a severe form of pneumonia caused by microorganisms belonging to the genus Legionella. According to doctors, the American could catch this rare disease due to a smoke generator operating at a concert where the girl visited. Experts suggested that dangerous bacteria were in the water used to create steam.

A week later, the American came to her senses, but, according to her, she felt that “something was wrong” with her limbs. “They were completely black and cold, but I was very lethargic, so I didn’t understand a lot,” she later said. Doctors told the girl that in order to save her, she would have to amputate her limbs. The American, not fully realizing what had happened, agreed to the operation. Davis had all limbs removed: legs below the knees and arms below the elbow. After the operation, doctors claimed that the girl would never be able to walk, but two months later she was able to take her first steps with prostheses. The parents of the American woman and her husband were aware of what had happened.

Davis found it difficult to accept what had happened, and she even became depressed because of what had happened. “I realized that I had lost a lot and how difficult my life is now,” she admitted. The American added that in the end she was able to cope with her emotions, accepted what had happened and her new condition, and had already begun to make plans for the future. She is currently learning how to use prostheses and hopes to go to driving school and become a disabled model and social worker to advocate for patients’ rights in the future. Davis claims that the experience did not affect her relationship with friends and family.
