For the Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo hockey players, 2023 was a successful year. For the first time in a long time, the team from Nizhny Novgorod was able to overcome the stage of the 1/8 finals of the Gagarin Cup, knocking out Dynamo Moscow from the fight for the trophy. In the quarterfinal match, the Torpedo hockey players lost to St. Petersburg SKA with a score of 4:0, but the season, like the whole year, can definitely be called successful. 2023 also turned out to be an excellent year for Torpedo in terms of developing young hockey players who will be able to play at a high level in the future.

The most striking discovery of 2023 at Torpedo was Vasily Atanasov. Before Torpedo, Vasily played only at the MHL level, where he played with varying success for Mammoth Ugra and got the opportunity to make his debut in the VHL, playing 17 matches there. In the KHL, Vasily adapted from the first matches and immediately began to benefit Igor Larionov’s team. Last season, Vasily managed to play in the playoffs of the Kharlamov Cup, becoming, together with Chaika, the owner of a prestigious trophy.

Torpedo general manager Maxim Gafurov spoke about Vasily Atanasov.

“Vasya has character, a crazy character. These are probably the things that, in addition to talent, are necessary. We will do everything possible so that Vasya can become a superstar here, so that he helps Torpedo and writes his name in history in golden letters,” Gafurov said.
