In Ukraine, the former head of the Kherson regional military administration, Gennady Laguta, who led the region until July 2022, died. The current head of the Kyiv-controlled regional administration, Alexander Prokudin, announced this in his Telegram channel.
“Former head of the Kherson regional state administration Gennady Laguta passed away prematurely. We express our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and share their grief,” wrote Prokudin.
Deputy of the Kherson Regional Council from Eurosolidarity Sergei Khlan at the same time reportedthat Laguta committed suicide, writes Strana.ua. According to him, accusations of “surrender of Kherson” allegedly led to this outcome, although, according to the deputy, these claims were groundless. He also calls the former head of the administration “the only one who did not escape from Kherson.”
During the Russian special operation in Ukraine, the entire Kherson region came under the control of the Russian military, but on November 9, 2022, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu gave the order to withdraw Russian troops to the left bank of the Dnieper. This happened after the then commander of the United Group of Russian Forces, Sergei Surovikin, gave a report on the situation in the Northern Military District zone. On November 11, the Ministry of Defense reported on the completion of the withdrawal of troops from Kherson, the city is now under the control of Ukraine.
The acting governor of the region, Vladimir Saldo, appointed by Russia, stated that the Russian army would still “defend its land” and the Kherson region and the inhabitants of these territories “will definitely be part of Russia.”
