The financial wealth of the world’s five wealthiest people has increased by 114% since 2020. At the same time, the wealth of almost 5 billion people has decreased, according to a charity report Oxfamdedicated to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

“We are witnessing the beginning of a decade of division as billions of people bear the economic shocks of pandemic, inflation and war while billionaire fortunes soar. This inequality is not accidental; The billionaire class ensures that corporations bring them more wealth at the expense of everyone else,” said acting CEO. Oxfam executive director Amitabh Behar.

The wealth of all the world’s billionaires has increased by $3.3 trillion over the past three years, and the growth rate is three times faster than inflation. At the same time, wage increases for nearly 800 million employees worldwide were lower than the rate of growth in consumer prices. According to the organization’s forecasts, the world will have its first dollar trillionaire in the next decade, and it will take another 229 years to eradicate poverty.

The organization called for reducing the gap between rich and poor people by strengthening government control over the activities of corporations, breaking up monopolistic companies and democratizing patent legislation. Also, according to Oxfam, government regulation of salaries of corporate executives, tax increases for super-rich citizens and equal access of the population to education and healthcare will help reduce inequality.

Oxfam is an international association that includes more than 17 organizations in 90 countries, in particular in the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA, and Australia. The organization’s activities are aimed at combating poverty. Among other things, Oxfam is seeking reform of the international financial organization and the establishment of fair trade rules.
