The Federation Council may announce the date of the presidential elections in November – Kommersant

The date of the presidential elections in Russia in 2024 will most likely be announced by the Federation Council in December. The head of the Federation Council commission for the protection of state sovereignty, Andrei Klimov, told reporters about this during a visit to Ankara.

“The elections have not been announced. The Federation Council announces the elections. Apparently this will be done in December. Well, according to the Constitution, in fact, too, which the president recently mentioned,” he said (quoted from “RIA News”).

Andrei Klimov added that after the start of the election campaign, “an appropriate procedure” will follow. United Russia, according to Mr. Klimov, is determined to “participate in an appropriate manner” in the campaign.

Current President Vladimir Putin has not yet announced whether he will run for a new presidential term. Yesterday, October 7, the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov offered cancel the Russian presidential elections scheduled for March 17, 2024 due to the military operation in Ukraine. Mr. Klimov in response statedthat “no one is going to change the Constitution,” but citizens have the right to make their proposals.

At the Eastern Economic Forum, which took place in September, Mr. Putin saidthat it is worth talking about participation in elections after the announcement of the voting date.

Sources close to the presidential administration told Kommersant that the start of the informal presidential campaign is scheduled for November. According to them, its “ideological framework” includes the importance of traditional values, the understanding of Russia as a separate civilization and the fight against external enemies.
