The Federation Council has adopted a law restricting the use of telephones in Russian schools. The initiative will prohibit students from using phones in class for personal purposes, but students can use a smartphone during recess or in an emergency.

The law is intended to equalize the legal status of teachers and students in terms of respect for human dignity, prevent cyberbullying and increase the involvement of schoolchildren in the educational process. The ability to use a telephone at school will remain in cases provided for in the educational program, in emergency situations and during breaks.

According to one of the authors of the law, Chairman of the Duma Committee on Education Olga Kazakova (ER), schools themselves will decide how the ban on smartphones will be implemented in practice: “Will gadgets be stored in lockers, in boxes, in tables, in briefcases, or not at all? whether school is brought in will be decided by parents together with teachers.”

Russian Education Minister Sergei Kravtsov previously emphasized that parents will remain in touch with their children, but during lessons, schoolchildren will be able to use phones only with the permission of the teacher.
