The Federal Penitentiary Service reported on the creation of 367 correctional centers for those sentenced to forced labor

Director of the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) Arkady Gostev announced the creation of 367 correctional centers in Russia, which are designed for 40,000 people sentenced to forced labor.

Mr. Gostev emphasized that the form of punishment alternative to deprivation of liberty “helps to increase the efficiency of the social adaptation of convicts, prepare them for civilian life, and also compensate for the damage they have caused.” According to him, new correctional centers were created jointly with regional authorities and businesses, TASS reports.

In 2021, 117 correctional centers were created in Russia, in which 8.7 thousand convicts sentenced to forced labor could serve their sentences, the agency notes. By 2024, according to the head of the Ministry of Justice Konstantin Chuichenko, it is necessary to create more than 80 thousand places for serving forced labor.

Earlier, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation demanded that the chairmen of regional courts give an explanation of the law enforcement practice, in which more than 35% of the defendants in criminal cases are sentenced to real terms of imprisonment. In particular, the SC recommends not to abuse conditional sentences, opting for a non-custodial sentence.
