The favorite was led astray – Newspaper Kommersant No. 44 (7489) of 03/16/2023

In the main, apparently, match of the next round of the Fonbet Cup of Russia, Dynamo knocked out his main favorite from the tournament, who found himself with him in the quarterfinal stage of the Way of Regions. After a draw in regular time with a score of 1:1, it defeated Zenit on its field in a penalty shootout.
The match on a noisy, not according to the fashion reigning in the national championship now empty stands Petersburg stadium started with an emergency. The goal scored by Dynamo is even somehow strange to call fast. So he would be, for example, in basketball. By football standards, it was not fast, but instantaneous – after the ball was played in the central circle, only ten seconds passed before Mumi Ngamalyo, laying down his body, fired from two and a half dozen meters, and the ball, hitting the post, ricocheted in the back goalkeeper Alexander Vasyutin, and from her – straight into the net. Apparently, Dynamo did not even dream of such a dispersal.
The continuation of the match was also good for him. Guests, of course, strained, but for the time being quite decently hobbled the Russian football flagship. Most of the endless anti-aircraft attacks dissolved in Dynamo traps even before the penalty area. The exception was the one that was unsuccessfully interrupted by Dynamo goalkeeper Igor Leshchuk. He jumped out to the canopy, threw the ball right on the leg of Gustave Mantua and also fell. The Brazilian hit with virtually no resistance from a dozen meters, but ruined the moment. The ball, bouncing off the lawn, flew off the field, hitting the crossbar.
However, towards the end of the first half, Zenit invented a way to break through these barriers. In fact, nothing needed to be invented.
The method was too simple, but the performers were luxurious. Claudinho, deftly removing his opponent from the road, rolled the ball to the edge of Douglas Santos, who ideally sent him on horseback to the center of the penalty area, and there Zelimkhan Bakaev was already adjusting to the pass. The account was equalized.
Without Arsen Zakharyan, who left during the break, who did not get in shape after an illness, Dynamo seems to have settled even deeper in the rear. But still, even in this position, almost pressed against the ropes, it looked not bad at all. In any case, something interesting ahead of Zenit hatched only in those rare episodes when the Dynamo players forgot who they were playing with, but remembered that they themselves were considered a daring team, and climbed to the front line, reducing the density of their ranks. Moreover, in the end, it was Dynamo that was inches away from victory, when at first the trajectory of Vyacheslav Grulev’s header hit the post, and a little later, Vasyutin’s exploits on the penalty line saved Zenit from trouble.
So the match turned into a penalty shootout. And in it everything was decided by the save of Leshchuk, who guessed where Douglas Santos would hit. So the Russian Cup was left without its favorite.
On this day, in addition to St. Petersburg, two more cup matches took place. One of them – between “Akhmat” and “Krasnodar”, which also found themselves in the “Way of Regions”, turned out to be rather insipid. Krasnodar looked prettier than the hosts, and in addition, they were terribly let down by Artem Timofeev. Akhmat conceded a goal in the middle of the first half, and before the break, Timofeev ran into Eduard Spertsyan’s leg so openly and hard that referee Sergei Ivanov had to show him a red card. In the majority, Krasnodar scored twice more (double in the asset of Nikita Krivtsov) and, having won 3-0, threw Grozny out of the tournament, and advanced to the semi-final stage of the lower part of the bracket.
In another match, there was no smell of melancholy. Well, except that the first half of it was not too bright.
“Wings of the Soviets” and CSKA, vying for reaching the finals of the “Way of the RPL”, did not score goals before the rest. But everything that happened after it more than compensated for the lack of significant events in the previous 45 minutes.
Barely back on the field, the Wings made a terrible mistake in defense. Moreover, it is impossible to say who was more to blame there – either Dmitry Tsypchenko, who awkwardly rolled the ball back and presented it to Jesus Medina, or goalkeeper Ivan Lomaev, who for some reason ran far out of the gate and opened it for Medina.
But the hosts did not suffer for long in the status of catching up. To a famously played corner with a discount on the long stand – on Vladimir Pisarsky, who is slowly turning from an unknown player into an excellent scorer by Russian standards. And then there was another Samara goal, already so spectacular that it could top the list of highlights of the entire domestic football season. Even in the Big Five championships, you don’t often see Glenn Bale pulling off a hard scissors kick as badly as he does. But VAR, which found a barely discernible offside from his partner, deprived Wings of a masterpiece.
They, however, were not upset, and soon Tsypchenko was rehabilitated for his recent blunder. With his head after a flank pass, he shot flawlessly, with no options for the army goalkeeper Vladislav Torop.
Meanwhile, CSKA somehow digested this period of its absolute helplessness and waited for its luck. In the second half, the army team was replaced by key defender Igor Diveev, who had been recovering for several months after a serious leg fracture earned back in September. Diveev and delivered that header, after which VAR turned on. And this time he was on the side of the army team, confirming that the ball hit Tsypchenko’s hand. The penalty was converted by Fedor Chalov.
True, the number one loser of the match was not destined to become Dmitry Tsypchenko, but Glenn Bale. Toward the end of the game, the player from whom the video stole the miracle goal spun the ball over the wall from a free kick so sharply that it seemed he was doomed to land on target. But no, he hit the post, and after a draw – 2: 2 – before the return, Moscow, meeting, the balance in the pair is slightly more favorable for CSKA.
