The expert told how often you should change your Wi-Fi router

Telecommunications expert, head of the Wi-Fi direction of the Dom.ru telecom provider Vyacheslav Burkhaylo in an interview Radio Sputnik called the optimal timing for replacing Wi-Fi routers.

According to him, like any other technical device, the router can become outdated. For example, the first Wi-Fi routers transmitted information 15,000 times slower than modern ones.

The transfer rate depends on the cost of the device, says Burhailo.

The cost of the device also determines the frequency of its replacement. So, a router worth 1-2 thousand rubles will have to be changed in a maximum of 1-2 years. A more expensive device, costing from 6 thousand rubles, will be able to remain relevant for up to 10 years.

This is due to the updating of both hardware – processors and memory modules, and software, that is, the emergence of new standards for transmitting information over the air, the expert explained.

Burhailo said the new standards are especially important because they “allow more information to be received and transmitted in a unit of time.”

The speed of information transfer increases sharply every year, the specialist noted. He gave “a prime example of how routers get better over time.”

According to him, the first set of IEEE 802.11 standards, which describe and regulate the work in wireless networks, appeared in 1997. On the first devices with such a standard, the information transfer rate “was up to 2 megabits per second.”

Today, according to Burhailo, “we see the introduction of the Wi-Fi 7 standard, which provides information transfer at speeds up to 30 gigabits per second.”

The expert noted that “this is 15 thousand times faster than it was 25 years ago.”
