On March 14, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, Russian Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev and Russian Railways General Director Oleg Belozerov reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the start of construction of the Moscow section of the Moscow-St. Petersburg high-speed highway. The decision to launch the project was made by the head of state earlier this year.
HSR-1 will pass through Tver and Veliky Novgorod, connecting the largest urban agglomerations and economic centers of Russia with a total population of about 40.2 million people – this is 27% of the country’s population. There are 16 stops planned on the route, four of which are within Moscow. Travel time between Moscow and St. Petersburg will be about 2 hours 15 minutes. Work must be carried out in dense urban areas without stopping train traffic.
“Thanks to its experience in implementing large-scale transport projects, as well as its strategic location on the country’s map, Moscow occupies an important place in the development of a high-speed highway,” notes Konstantin Trofimenko, director of the Center for Smart City Research at the Higher School of Economics. – Such significant transport projects as the Moscow Central Circle and the Moscow Central Diameters have already been implemented in the capital. This accumulated experience is ready to move to a new level with the development of a high-speed highway between St. Petersburg and Moscow.”
