Pavel Cherenkov, General Director of Gonets Satellite System JSC, said that Starlink and OneWeb cannot work on the territory of the Russian Federation, because they want to work at the same frequencies as the Russian satellite system Skif.
He added that the application from the “Gonets” system was sent to the International Telecommunication Union first, so this company should have priority.
It is not the first time Starlink and OneWeb come up with a proposal to use their satellite systems on the territory of the Russian Federation, but they are refused.
Cherenkov clarified that the range in which Skif operates is an invaluable sector of the frequency spectrum, in which the combination of signal attenuation from interference and data transfer rate is optimal. “That is why everyone wants to secure the rights to this particular frequency resource,” he told TASS.
- Starlink is a global satellite system deployed by SpaceX to provide high-speed broadband satellite Internet access.
- OneWeb is OneWeb Corporation’s interconnected satellite system designed to provide broadband Internet using mobile satellite technologies. The investors of the OneWeb project are such well-known companies as Airbus Group, Bharti Enterprises, Hughes Network Systems.
