The official representative of the foreign policy service of the European Union (EU) Peter Stano in response to a request “Tapes.ru” stated that the EU took note of the signing by Russian President Vladimir Putin of a law on the abolition of informing the Secretary General of the Council of Europe about the introduction of a state of emergency or martial law in the country.
As Stano noted, the Union takes note of the amendments to Russian legislation, but he indicated that Russia remains bound by its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and other treaties to which it is a party.
The EU foreign policy spokesman also added that the Union reiterates its call to respect, protect and implement relevant obligations under international human rights law.
