The European Parliament by an absolute majority called on NATO to invite Ukraine to the alliance
The European Parliament called on NATO to invite Ukraine to the North Atlantic bloc. However, according to the deputies, the country should be accepted into the alliance only after the end of the conflict.
A press release on the website of the parliament says that the deputies want the NATO bloc to fulfill its obligations to Ukraine and “prepare the ground for an invitation to Kyiv.” According to the information, 425 deputies voted for the document, 38 against and 42 abstained.
They call for Ukraine to join NATO “as soon as possible”, but only after the end of the conflict with Russia. Until then, NATO countries and partners, according to European parliamentarians, should give Ukraine temporary security guarantees that will be applied immediately after the end of hostilities.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Ukraine at the next summit of the North Atlantic bloc in Vilnius will receive “a clear signal that its future is in NATO.”
