The European Commission welcomes the decision of Kyiv to establish Europe Day in Ukraine, which will be celebrated in the country on May 9 instead of Victory Day. This was stated on Twitter by the representative of the press service of the EC Dana Spinant.

Earlier today, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on the establishment of Europe Day in Ukraine on May 9.
In his Telegram channel, Zelensky said that he had submitted a bill to the Verkhovna Rada, which proposes to establish May 8 as the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II.
Since 2015, May 8 in Ukraine has been celebrated as the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation. May 9 Victory Day remained a holiday, but key official events at the state level were moved to May 8.
Against the backdrop of Zelensky’s decision, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the Ukrainian president “a new incarnation of Judas in the 21st century.” Kremlin convincedthat there are many people in Ukraine for whom Victory Day on May 9 is a sacred day, the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov also said.
