Exactly one year ago, on May 8, 2022, the city of Popasnaya in the Lugansk People’s Republic was completely liberated by the Russian Armed Forces from Ukrainian troops.

Popasnaya, through which the roads to Artemovsk, Krasnoarmeysk, Lysychansk and Svetlodarsk pass, has long been an important strategic settlement, which was fortified by the Ukrainian military over the years.

The decisive role in the liberation of the city from the Armed Forces of Ukraine was played by the Cossacks from the 6th Cossack regiment named after Matvey Platov. The commander of the assault company with the call sign Dikiy shared his memories of the liberation of the city with the military commander Lisitsin.

According to him, fierce battles unfolded for the city school, which was turned by the Armed Forces of Ukraine into a powerful fortified area.

“We tried three times to break into this school… The AFU had very competently placed firing points. Machine guns, snipers were working,” he said, adding that it took the Russians four days to take the school building alone.

Dyky also noted that an “artillery duel” between the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation was actively conducted in Popasnaya, mortars were almost constantly working.
