Politico: a number of EU countries fear the consequences of depriving Hungary of voting rights

Some European Union (EU) member states fear the consequences of Hungary’s possible withdrawal of voting rights. This was reported by Politico, citing European diplomats.

Sources said that representatives of a number of Central and Eastern European countries are afraid to invoke Article 7 of the EU Treaty, according to which Budapest can be deprived of its voting rights. They believe they can bring similar attention to rule of law issues in their countries in the future.

However, other countries, according to some European officials, are ready to oppose Hungary. This could become a reality, one of the sources said, if Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocks an agreement to allocate 50 billion euros to Ukraine.

Previously Hungary offered to finance Kyiv without harming the EU budget and without a general loan, and is ready to pay its share from its own budget.

Earlier, Budapest once again blocked a 50 billion euro aid package for Ukraine.
