The environmental center reported the discovery of 1.7 thousand carcasses of seals on the coast in Dagestan

Director General of the Caspian Conservation Center Zaur Gapizov said that 1.7 thousand dead seals were found in the Kirovsky district of Makhachkala. According to him, the figures are not final, the exact number of dead animals will be established after the completion of the inspection of environmental agencies.
“In a few days, 1,700 carcasses of Caspian seals were found on the coast of the Caspian Sea in Dagestan. Judging by the appearance of the seals we found, they died about two weeks ago. Signs of violent death, the remains of fishing nets were not found. Most likely, the number of dead seals is much higher,” said Mr. Gapizov (quoted by RIA Novosti).
According to Zaur Gapizov, the coastal patrol of the Caspian Conservation Center, together with inspectors from the Federal Fisheries Agency, continue to explore the coast to determine the exact number of dead individuals.
From the data of the environmental center it follows that the number of seals in the Caspian Sea does not exceed 70 thousand individuals. However, more accurate data are not available, since there is no monitoring of the number and expedition of seals in Dagestan.
“We are planning to set up this process, including contacting the relevant services so that they can allocate funds for conducting expeditions to the places of seal rookeries. They need to be chipped and counted,” the head of the center added. In addition, Mr. Gapizov considers it necessary to create a rehabilitation center for wounded and sick animals in Dagestan.
The day before, December 3, the North Caucasian Territorial Administration of the Federal Agency for Fisheries reported about the discovery of 650–700 dead seals. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources of Dagestan, was found over 300 seals. The department said that the death of animals occurred as a result of “natural natural factors.”
