The Russian Embassy in Lebanon recommends that Russian citizens postpone visiting the republic. This was stated by the Russian Ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Rudakov on the Rossiya 24 TV channel.
“What could we say to our citizens who are planning to travel to Lebanon, here we need to think several times and, if possible, postpone any trips currently planned to Lebanon. Postpone them to a later date,” he said (quote according to TASS).
Rudakov emphasized that the diplomatic mission maintains contacts with Russians living in Lebanon. He advised citizens fearing for their safety to leave Lebanon through Beirut airport. According to the ambassador, “now is the time” to take advantage of this opportunity.
The situation in the Middle East escalated in early October when the Palestinian group Hamas attacked Israel. In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched Operation Iron Swords, striking hundreds of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government announced that the country had entered a state of war.
In a show of solidarity with the Palestinians, the Shiite group Hezbollah on October 8 fired at three Israeli posts in the area of the so-called Shebaa farm in the northeast of the country, a disputed territory captured by Israel from Syria in 1967. Israel carried out retaliatory airstrikes against the positions of Lebanese militants. October 9, Lebanese Foreign Ministry statedthat Hezbollah promised not to conduct military operations against Israel unless it begins to “persecute” Lebanon.
Earlier today Israel announced evacuation of residents of 28 settlements located within two kilometers of the border with Lebanon.
