The EAEU is discussing the introduction of 20% VAT on cross-border trade through marketplaces

The Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) is considering introducing a 20% VAT on cross-border trade through marketplaces with countries outside the EAEU, reported “Izvestia” in one of the domestic companies in the online trading market. The Ministry of Industry and Trade specified to the publication that the draft amendments with changes to the Customs Code of the EAEU are already ready.
According to the source of the newspaper, Belarus proposed to introduce VAT on cross-border trade, it was supported by Kazakhstan. In 2022, these countries introduced such a fee on online trade goods coming from abroad. From the letter of the Wildberries platform to the Ministry of Economy (Izvestia got acquainted with the document), it follows that the initiative requires marketplaces to withhold and transfer VAT to the budget on transactions of sellers from countries outside the EAEU.
According to the publication, Wildberries believes that the initiative could negatively affect trade with China, which is not part of the EEU. The company said the absence of VAT on foreign goods stimulates demand and counters the pressure of sanctions by saturating the market with goods.
