The driver of the US president’s motorcade at the G20 summit in New Delhi has been suspended from duty for attempting to give a lift to a private client during working hours. The Indian Express writes about this.
The driver from Haryana was part of the advance party of the official US motorcade. The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs entered into a contract with his company to transport participants to the G20 summit. The departure of the president’s motorcade on Saturday was scheduled for 09.00 – 09.30. At 08.00 the driver received a call from a regular client, an entrepreneur. Reasoning that there was enough time, the driver agreed to give him a ride.
The businessman was heading to the Taj Mahal Hotel, where the UAE President was staying. The hotel security service noticed stickers indicating that the car belonged to another hotel and Biden’s motorcade. As a result, security officers did not allow the car to enter the territory and asked for an explanation.
The driver stated that he was not aware of the official protocol prohibition on such trips and called his attempt to earn extra money during official time a mistake.
After a conversation, the driver and his passenger were released without any charges being brought. But security officials were forced to notify the Foreign Ministry about the incident. As a result, the driver was promptly suspended from working in the motorcade of the American president.
