Allergy to plant pollen is one of the most common types of allergic reactions among the inhabitants of Russia. According to expert estimates, about 25% of the country’s population suffers from it. In the cities of Central Russia, allergies are most often caused by birch, alder, willow, elm and pine, from herbs – timothy, foxtail and bluegrass.
The mechanism for the development of hay fever is as follows: pollen settles on the mucous membrane of the eyes and nose, and the cells of the immune system start the process of recognizing the allergen and producing protein compounds (antibodies) designed to neutralize the harmful agent. An allergic reaction can be caused by a malfunction in the immune system, stress, chronic illness, poisoning with chemicals or bacterial toxins, parasite infestation, and many other reasons. With hay fever, the nose and eyelids itch, and ocular conjunctivitis may also occur.
As Elena Drozdova says, allergic conjunctivitis is a pathological condition based on a local allergic reaction of the mucous membrane of the eyes: “When an allergen settles on the surface of the eye, local immunity is activated, histamine is released, which causes allergic inflammation. Symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis are itching, tearing, redness, swelling of the eyes and eyelids. Over the past 30 years, there has been an increase in the prevalence of allergic conjunctivitis. Environmental factors and genetic predisposition play an important role in the development of the disease, as evidenced by the results of epidemiological studies conducted in various countries.”
The expert notes that allergic conjunctivitis is one of the widespread diseases that occur in almost all countries of the world. The frequency of occurrence reaches 20% in persons of all ages. “Allergic conjunctivitis is the cause of a significant decrease in the quality of life of patients, its symptoms can be so pronounced that they interfere with work and sleep. In addition, in 40–60% of cases, allergic conjunctivitis is associated with diseases such as allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, and atopic dermatitis. 90% of patients suffer from seasonal allergic conjunctivitis and only 10% have a year-round form. It is known that only 10% of patients with eye allergies go to an ophthalmologist and receive the necessary treatment,” Dr. Drozdova complains.
