According to Demyanovskaya, many of them contain toxic substances – pyrethroids. “They act like a neurotoxic poison on mosquitoes and midges, that is, they paralyze,” the doctor said.

Mosquito repellents can also have a negative effect on humans, she warned. This mainly happens when the dosages are violated or the funds are not used according to the instructions. Also, a person may have an individual intolerance to the components that make up the repellents.

Demyanovskaya noted that “if it comes into contact with the skin, mucous membranes or in the respiratory tract,” such substances can cause dizziness, headache, lowering blood pressure, sleep disturbance, and allergic reactions.

According to her, you need to carefully read the instructions and apply repellents with great care. In particular, insect repellents must be applied strictly to clothing and not used indoors.

To protect children, special children’s repellents are needed, acting softer, since they contain other active substances.

In addition, you should pay attention to “products with natural ingredients, for example, based on essential oils of lemon, mint, camphor, thyme.” According to the doctor, they are quite effective and at the same time non-toxic.

However, since natural ingredients can also cause allergies, they should also be used with caution.

In addition, Demyanovskaya noted that in some cases, pyrethroids are indispensable. For example, against ixodid ticks, natural-based remedies are absolutely useless, but pyrethroids cypermethrin and alphacypermethrin are effective.
