Electronic cigarettes will not help quit smoking and will only aggravate the situation, said Anton Masyakin, chief freelance psychiatrist and narcologist in Moscow.
In a commentary to RIA Novosti, he noted that this method would only complicate the process of quitting smoking.
“The fact is that, using a nicotine-free cigarette, the smoker continues to regularly make all the same habitual movements as with regular smoking,” he said, noting that the stereotypical behavior of a smoker does not change, and there will be no result.
Moreover, the expert added, when stressed, a smoker is more likely to take a regular cigarette than an electronic one. According to him, the best way to quit smoking is by combining lifestyle changes and pharmacology.
“To reduce the manifestation of nicotine withdrawal syndrome, which manifests itself in cravings for nicotine, bouts of anger or irritability, anxiety and depression, sleep problems, and so on, other therapeutic methods are also used,” Masyakin said.
He also pointed out that in some cases, a person after quitting smoking may begin to consume more alcohol, so you need to give up everything at once.
