For some categories of people, it is better to stop drinking mineral water forever, gastroenterologist Andrey Yakushev said.
In a comment to Gazeta.ru, he noted that this primarily applies to people with edematous syndrome of any origin. According to him, due to the high content of sodium, mineral water in their bodies can significantly change the level of water concentration, resulting in severe edema.
He noted that mineral water can contain up to 200 milligrams of sodium ions per liter.
“It’s a lot. Therefore, people with edematous syndrome of any etiology are not recommended to consume large amounts of mineral water,” the doctor said, noting that it is also better for such a category of people to abstain from salt.
Yakushev also warned that patients with hypertension, chronic heart failure, kidney disease and cirrhosis of the liver should also not drink mineral water without consulting a doctor. According to him, the presence of such diseases already implies violations in the system that regulates the volume of blood and extracellular fluid, and sodium that comes with mineral water aggravates the situation.
Yakushev pointed out that mineral water allows you to adjust the level of electrolytes, which is important for people with dehydration.
“Such water will not harm healthy citizens either, but it should not be abused, like any other products,” he said.
