Geriatrician Novoselov dispelled the myth of Caucasian longevity
Due to confusion with the age of the population of the USSR in the 20th century, a legend arose about the phenomenon of Caucasian longevity, says Valery Novoselov, geriatrician, neurologist and chairman of the gerontology section of the MOIP at Moscow State University. M. V. Lomonosov. Writes about it “Gazeta.ru”.
Novoselov notes that in the USSR there were three centers of longevity: Abkhaz, Azerbaijani and Yakut, where people lived for more than 120 years. However, according to him, these people are not long-lived, but examples of “successful” aging, as they lived somewhere in their 90s.
All of them were born at a time of insufficiently accurate birth registration, the absence of regular military service in the region, and therefore there were no documents that could determine the exact age of the inhabitants.
Novoselov also notes that some people inflated their age in order to gain more respect, and some underestimated it in order to get married.
In addition, the sex of all Caucasian centenarians was male, which does not add credibility to the phenomenon of Caucasian longevity. Novoselov concludes that longevity and championship in this “sport” is always for women, and they live longer than men.
