Surely, many have experienced heartburn at least once in their lives. An unpleasant burning sensation and even pain in the chest area provoke us to look for a miracle cure that will help us get rid of unpleasant sensations in a matter of minutes or even seconds. However, rarely does anyone think that ordinary products can be more effective than any medicine.

Gastroenterologist and acid reflux expert Joseph Salhab decided to share his own story in a video on his social network page (since November the video has received more than 740 thousand views), which can help many.

Heartburn is known to occur when undigested food and stomach acid rise to the throat. The disease, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs when stomach acid repeatedly backs up into the esophagus, which connects the mouth and stomach.

According to the Mayo Clinic, signs of acid reflux include heartburn, regurgitation of food or acidic liquid, abdominal or chest pain, trouble swallowing, or a sensation of a lump in the throat.

The manifestation of this disease at night can cause a nagging cough or provoke asthma.

Highly acidic foods such as coffee, tomatoes, alcohol, and spicy or fatty foods can increase stomach acid and cause heartburn and acid reflux.

“I had really bad acid reflux the other day,” Dr. Salhab began. The doctor noted that the cause could have been spicy food, which gave the man “probably the worst heartburn he’s had in a long time.”

After taking several over-the-counter medications, the discomfort continued. Giving up on the achievements of pharmaceuticals, Joseph Salhab decided to use food: “I took a banana, ate it, and after 30 seconds my heartburn completely went away and never came back. This shows that food can also be part of a treatment plan for acid reflux and heartburn.”

The fact is that bananas are low in acid and high in alkaline, which can soothe the irritated mucous membrane of the esophagus. Dr. Salhab also pointed to foods such as almonds, broccoli and cabbage as low-acid foods.
