The “fireball” that was spotted in the sky over Japan on the morning of January 15 turned out to be a fireball. This was stated by Sergei Yazev, professor at Irkutsk State University, senior researcher at the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics SB RAS, they write “News”.
According to him, judging by the video published on the Internet, there is no doubt that this is a fireball – a tiny cosmic body that entered the earth’s atmosphere and completely burned up.
“This is absolutely not a fragment of space debris – the speed is too high,” Yazev said.
The scientist also noted that usually the size of such bodies does not exceed 10-20 centimeters. Due to the enormous speed, he said, the pebble heated up to a thousand degrees. Ionized oxygen gave the car a greenish tint, the specialist added.
Yazev noted that the high speed of the fall and its gradual fading indicate that most likely the cosmic body did not reach the earth and collapsed in the atmosphere. The scientist concluded that the means of modern astronomy can “catch” such objects in advance if they are large and moving against the background of the night sky.
