Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the deficit in the transport industry is growing from year to year. He stressed that the government needs to find a permanent source of funding to upgrade public transport in the regions.

“Special attention, of course, requires the financing of the industry. The shortage here is growing, unfortunately, from year to year. Therefore, in accordance with the instructions already given, the government needs to find a reliable and, I emphasize, a permanent source of financing for the development and renovation of public transport in the regions,” Vladimir Putin said during a meeting of the State Council Presidium on the development of public transport (quote from site Kremlin).

On the issue of modernization and renewal of public transport, the president asked the heads of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation to consider the possibility of using a public-private partnership, which, according to him, is being widely implemented in Moscow.

Vladimir Putin also noted that the salary of a public transport driver in most subjects of Russia is lower than the average salary in the region. According to him, people are reluctant to choose this profession, its prestige is falling.

The President also mentioned that in the last decade Russia has experienced a boom in the growth of the number of passenger cars, and during this period the popularity of public transport has noticeably decreased. He noted that this trend is now changing and more and more people just prefer public transport. According to him, more than 14 billion people are transported by ground public transport annually in the Russian Federation.
