Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin believes that the proposal of his colleague from Poland, Kamil Bortnichuk, to create a refugee team for Russian and Belarusian athletes may threaten human rights. According to him, if the International Olympic Committee (IOC) offers the Russians to compete at the Olympic Games in the status of refugees, this will be a manifestation of the policy of destroying the national sports system.
“It is necessary to make a legal assessment of the proposals of the IOC, as far as it correlates with the charter and human rights. But if everything is so, then this is a policy of destruction of the national sports system. We prioritize our athletes and coaches, this is our sovereignty,” the Minister of Sports said on the sidelines of the SPIEF (quoted by RIA Novosti).
For the first time, the initiative to create a team of refugees was made by the head of the IOC, Thomas Bach, in January 2016. The national team appeared as one of the ways to draw attention to the problem of forced migration to Europe of people from the Middle East who are fleeing military conflicts and poverty. The refugee team took part in the Olympics twice: in 2016 and 2021 (the Olympics were postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
In March 2022, athletes from Russia and Belarus banned participate in international competitions after the recommendation of the IOC. A year later, the IOC recommended that representatives of these two countries be admitted to tournaments (with a number of reservations and conditions). IOC President Thomas Bach supported the return of Russian athletes under a neutral status.
