The Minsk City Court sentenced the well-known Belarusian swimmer and oppositionist Aleksandra Gerasimenya to 12 years in prison in absentia. Journalists report this from the courtroom.
Together with the athlete, the founder of the opposition Belarusian Sports Solidarity Fund, Alexander Opeikin, was sentenced to the same verdict. This is the first sentencing in absentia against members of the opposition who are outside the country.
“To find Gerasimenya and Opeykin guilty… And to impose a sentence of 12 years in prison for each,” the court said.
The court also ruled to compensate damages to Belarusian sports associations and organizations in the amount of more than 600 thousand Belarusian rubles (more than 220 thousand dollars). The athlete’s property was seized to secure this compensation.
Gerasimenya is a medalist of the Olympic Games and World Championships. She and Opeikin are accused of calling for sanctions against Belarus.
