A Nizhny Novgorod court arrested a local resident for five days for wearing earrings in the shape of a frog, painted in seven colors of the rainbow, the human rights project “Aegis” reported. Nizhny Novgorod was charged with public display of symbols of an extremist organization under Part 1 of Art. 20.3 Code of Administrative Offences.
On January 29, a video circulated on social networks in which a man approached a guy and a girl in a cafe and demanded that the young man take off his badge with the flag of Ukraine, but was refused. After that, the man forcibly tore the badge off his jacket. The young man’s girlfriend had rainbow earrings in the shape of a frog.
After the video was published, the girl was summoned for questioning to the Center for Countering Extremism and detained pending trial, human rights activists reported.
The court was unable to determine exactly what signs of prohibited symbols were on the earrings, and referred to the recognition of the “international LGBT movement” as an extremist organization, said the lawyer from Aegis.
“The defense insisted on the absence of corpus delicti, as well as on an error of perception: none of the interrogated employees who drew up the report could name what kind of symbolism the client demonstrated,” the lawyer said.
