The Fifth Cassation Court of General Jurisdiction in Pyatigorsk commuted the sentence of the wife of a former federal judge and the mother of Yangulbayev activists, Zarema Musayeva. She was sentenced in Chechnya to five years for assault on a police officer and fraud. The court sentenced Musayeva to four years and nine months of imprisonment in a penal colony. The correspondent reported this TASS from the courtroom.

“The panel of judges decided to change the court’s verdict regarding Musayeva, to exclude from the verdict instructions on taking into account aggravating circumstances,” the judge said (quoted by TASS).

December 12 Shalinsky court of Chechnya refused woman on parole. Zarema Musaeva has type 2 diabetes. According to her defense and relatives, the woman’s health condition worsened during the time she spent in the pre-trial detention center.

Musaeva’s family stated in 2022 that she was kidnapped in Nizhny Novgorod. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the woman was taken in for questioning in connection with a fraud case. Summer 2023 trial admitted Musaeva is guilty of committing violence against government officials and fraud (Part 2 of Article 318 and Part 3 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). She was initially sentenced to five years and six months in a general regime colony. Later sentence softened up to five years in a colony-settlement.

Musayeva’s husband, former judge Saidi Yangulbaev, believes that the case against his wife is related to the activities of their sons. Cases have been opened against Ibragim and Baysangur Yangulbayev for calling for terrorism and working with an extremist organization.
