The Crimean Garrison Military Court in September dismissed the criminal case against Igor Akurenko, who had previously been mobilized and then became involved in a criminal case in connection with leaving his unit, RBC reports.
The report states that the reason for the dismissal of the case was the death of the accused. The case was opened under Part 5 of Art. 337 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (unauthorized abandonment of a unit or place of service; provides for a punishment of five to ten years in prison).
As previously reported, on January 17, 2023, Akurenko did not show up for service in a military unit on time. At the same time, there were no valid reasons for his absence; it was later established that he had evaded service until March. It was later established that the man passed away on August 11, although the circumstances of his death and its causes were not disclosed.
In connection with the death of the accused, his defense filed a corresponding petition, which was supported by the daughter of the deceased, and the prosecutor’s office agreed to terminate the criminal case. At the same time, Akurenko’s defense also did not comment.
