French President Emmanuel Macron said Israeli athletes would compete in the 2024 Olympics and called them “leaders of peace.” This is how he responded to calls from French deputies to exclude the country from participating in the competition due to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
“We may disagree with Israel on how to respond and how to defend, but we cannot say that Israel is an attacker,” Mr. Macron said on air. BFMTV.
According to the French President, he hopes that Israeli athletes will be agents of peace, as they will have to compete with other players from the Middle East. Emmanuel Macron also called on athletes to be decent and not make disrespectful comments towards other Olympic participants.
Several French MPs have called for Israeli athletes to be barred from competition or allowed to compete at the Olympics under a neutral flag. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) reminded that such decisions are made not by politicians, but by representatives of the sports organization.
In December 2023, the IOC allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in the Olympics in neutral status and in single sports. The games will take place from July 26 to August 11 in Paris.
