The capital of the Chechen Republic, the city of Grozny, received the status of the cultural capital of Russia in 2025. This decision was announced at the finals of the competition dedicated to the elections of the cultural capital of 2024, which was held in Moscow. The title was awarded to Grozny without the traditional competition between cities.
Nizhny Novgorod became the winner of the title of cultural capital of 2024. However, at the time of summing up the results of the competition, the chairman of the organizing committee, State Duma deputy Nikolai Novichkov, announced that the status of the cultural capital of 2025 was assigned to the city of Grozny. According to him, such a “wise decision” will allow cities to better prepare for future events, including in terms of financing.
“We realized that we could only have one way out – to look further than we expected a year ago. Therefore, today we will name the cultural capital of 2024 and 2025. And next year we will determine the cultural capital of 2026 and so on,” said Nikolai Novichkov. The video from the award ceremony was published on the competition page on YouTube.
The Capital of Culture of the Year competition started in 2023. The competition offers cultural and educational projects that can be implemented upon receiving the status of cultural capital. Teams representing administrative centers of Russian constituent entities and urban districts with a population of at least 250 thousand people can take part in it. Representatives of Moscow and St. Petersburg can take part in the competition only as co-organizers and experts.
