Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota took full responsibility for inviting a veteran of the SS division to the Canadian Parliament. As part of his visit to Canada, the President of Ukraine addressed the deputies and, together with them, greeted the 98-year-old combatant with applause. All this led to scandal and outrage from, in particular, Poland and Israel. Kommersant FM political commentator Dmitry Drize believes that the West does not fully understand the essence of what is happening in the post-Soviet space.

A big scandal occurred during Vladimir Zelensky’s visit to Canada. Since many are already aware, it should immediately be noted that the Speaker of the House of Commons, Anthony Rota, has taken full responsibility. He stated that he alone and no one else was to blame for what happened.

As you know, 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka was invited to the national parliament for the speech of the President of Ukraine. He was introduced as a veteran of the First Ukrainian Division, which fought for the independence of Ukraine against the Russians during World War II. He received a large portion of applause, including from Vladimir Alexandrovich.

And it turned out that Mr. Hunka served in the notorious SS division “Galicia” with all the ensuing consequences. This led to indignation not only on the part of Russia, but also Poland, as well as Israel. We will not plunge into the past and recall historical facts, but in the present Zelensky has very difficult relations with the last two states. It is not difficult to guess that such incidents further add fuel to the fire and do not help reduce tension.

Not to mention what an unexpected gift the Russian state media received – the Canadians framed their ally. At the same time, Vladimir Zelensky’s current big foreign tour turned out to be not as rosy and successful as it happened before. Traditionally, I don’t want to give advice to anyone, especially the leadership of the state of Canada, but, nevertheless, this case is very indicative. Finally, hire real consultants – specialists in the post-Soviet space. There are some who may be able to suggest something useful in order to eliminate mistakes in the future.

All this is very significant. The West absolutely does not understand with whom and what it has to face, it acts on the basis of invented cliches that have long been untrue. And not all numerous experts often have the right to bear this high title. There is a completely utopian idea that high standards of democracy are applicable in so-called third countries.

Look how the democratic restructuring of Afghanistan ended. Yes, of course, they live in a different dimension – for example, they seriously believe that the law, if adopted, will be universally respected and binding.

Yes, of course, it is mandatory, but there are certain specifics for a particular area that they there, in the West, do not fully understand. What can I say here? It’s never too late to learn. But before you teach others, it would be good to start understanding something yourself. And, in fact, a demonstration of support is not always like that. And sometimes it happens quite the opposite.
