Chinese woman did not receive the promised dowry from her groom and had an abortion

In China, a woman decided to terminate her pregnancy in the fifth month after her fiancé failed to pay the promised bride price for her. This was reported by the South China Morning Post.

Tingting, a 35-year-old resident of Fujian Province, met a man surnamed Liang in August 2023. Two months later she discovered that she was pregnant. Liang agreed to the marriage and promised to pay the traditional ransom of 220 thousand yuan (2.8 million rubles), which was set by the bride’s family.

Liang assured Tintin that he had the money, but it would only be available in December. She invited him to pay part of the amount and register the marriage immediately, but he refused. In December, Tintin also did not receive the ransom. By the time Liang continued to make excuses, she learned that the money intended for her would be used to renovate his mother’s house. As a result, Tintin decided to break off relations with him and had an abortion.

The reaction to the incident on Chinese social networks was contradictory. “Abortion was a reasonable choice, otherwise both she and the child would have suffered,” the publication quotes one of the top comments. Others commented on the size of the ransom, considering it too high.

Bride price is an ancient tradition that survives in some regions of Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Oceania. In China, the bride’s relatives usually ask for a ransom of 200 thousand yuan (1.8 million rubles) and an apartment.
