General Director of the Bolshoi Theater Vladimir Urin gave an interview to Rossiyskaya Gazeta on the occasion of the opening of the next season, the 248th in a row. The general meaning is this: there has been a change in the socio-political situation in the country.
Before this happened, half the world went to the Bolshoi Theater. This is very important, this is the essence of art, in particular music. Now only a few come, and then almost incognito, asking to keep the secret of their arrival. The stars themselves, of course, are not to blame; they would happily visit here more often, but politicians are putting pressure on them.
Problem number two: certain creators of the performances turned out to be, let’s say, politically illiterate. In addition, new laws are being adopted in Russia, for example, banning LGBT propaganda. So some names disappear from posters. This is a sign of the times.
And, yes, other performances by similar directors have to be withdrawn from the show for the same reason. But the theater is not to blame, the people demand it: letters are coming in a continuous stream, they say, we don’t want to see and endure all this. And what do you want to do with all this? You have to obey.
Art belongs to the people, and no one has canceled this. And, as mentioned above, changes in the socio-political situation have occurred. All clear.
Just one small question – why are you talking about difficulties then? On the contrary, it’s still great, things are going well: culture and art are being cleansed of alien elements and, scary to think, the influence of the West.
Of course, I don’t want to give advice, but nevertheless, we can say, for example, like this: we begin the next season of 2023 with a feeling of great and undisguised joy. The socio-political situation in the country has changed, but only for the better. And, you see, we now have a truly folk repertoire, without any pernicious influence. Well, okay. Large tours are planned, the artists will go to friendly countries.
True, it should be noted, solely as a remark: those unreliable ones that left, for some unknown reason, drew full houses and provided good revenue. Who will replace them? That is the question. And the stars for the most part are in the West for some reason, in the den of vice.
In culture and art, unfortunately, import substitution does not work.
Yes, in fact, anonymous performances without authors are also something fundamentally new or well-forgotten old, maybe so.
But in general, we can say that the Bolshoi Theater has seen something like this in its lifetime. Certainly he is no stranger to changes in the socio-political situation. So he will definitely survive the current mild complications somehow. At least let’s hope so.
