Scientists have long known about the seaweed Pseudo-nitzschia, certain species of which produce domoic acid, which is dangerous to humans. It is common in the sea in the Far East, and its presence does not cause anything unusual, said the deputy director of the National Scientific Center for Marine Biology. A.V. Tatyana Orlova pointed out that domoic acid is a dangerous psychotoxin and its content is regulated in products of marine origin in all countries. It also poses a threat to coastal marine ecosystems. The problem with this psychotoxin has been known for over 50 years. The alga Pseudo-nitzschia, which produces this acid, is a common phytoplankton of the Far Eastern seas.
However, Tatyana Orlova noted that the “detection” of this algae does not cause a sensation, since it has always been and will be present in our waters, and so far this is not a problem for Russian waters. Unlike Russia, in the USA, especially in California, the situation is different. There, marine mammals and other organisms are endangered. However, in Russia there is control and monitoring of this.
In the summer of 2022, scientists recorded the highest concentration of microalgae in the last 30 years in the Amur Bay of Vladivostok, which can cause poisoning in humans when accumulated in shellfish. At the end of September 2020, “red tides” in Kamchatka attracted public attention after a change in the color of the water on Khalaktyrsky Beach, as well as the discovery of many dead marine animals. As a result, criminal cases were opened, and the natural factor associated with algal blooms, which occurred due to warmer water than usual, was officially recognized.
